Chest and Back

Sigh... Week 3, I have to be honest, I bagged on yoga on Sunday and Kempo on Tuesday. It's OK I can handle the strong words I'm about to get from you. I'm beating myself up over it too. Sunday morning Is my second night of my 36hour work weekend and I was feeling it! My challenge in completing P90X truly is my work schedule. I love working nights but that was before the X. Now it seems that I just don't have the steam(motivation) to get off work and hit the training... Does this make for a bad person, I think not. week 3 is going to be my hit it and forget it week! I'm back and feeling better than ever, I'm not even sore like I was this time last week. Admittedly, I am getting tired and bored of the same routine, But I just have to remember that shortly I will be moving on to phase 2.

Phase 2 is where I see the big jump in result from all of the YouTube video's out there! This is that I can't what for... results! In the last 2 weeks I have got down to 212 and can tell some of my shirts and shorts are a little bit looser on me... So we will see I guess! My diet is still a high protien low carb with lots of fruits and veggies, Fish like salmon and tuna(canned or pouch... I'm not rich) and good for you nuts. Although I did cheat and enjoyed one of the new spicy chicken sandwiches from chic-fil-a the other day, Mmm! I am doing well otherwise, I'm going to finish this program if it kills me! Well back to the grind. Thanks for reading!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://upthedownwardspiral-d.blogspot.com/2010/06/p90x-day-15-start-of-week-3-chest-and.html' title='P90X: Day 15, start of week 3. I'm busy and tired! I was off Wednesday(Day 7, Rest day) and Thursday(Chest and back, Day 8). Well Wednesday for my rest day I played softball for my Depts league team and I had Kennedy that night too. Thursday I had the range for my annual Qualls... I got home from a long hot day in the sun at 2230(10:30) that night! To say that I was beat down is an understatement! I bagged the chest and back workout! "OH NO" you say?! Don't worry, I doubled up the next day, so Friday not only did I do Chest and Back, but I also did my PLYOMETRICS too! I;m not a beast but I felt good after words! I hydrated and fueled my body the right way and even took some berry's to work with me that night too. Yup I worked 12hrs that night also! I got home this morning and fell right to sleep and slept till 1400(2pm).

I completed Shoulders and Arms today and I do feel a little drained today, like I'm only at 65% energy level... Time to work another long 12hr night shift... and then in the morning I'm taking Boo out to breakfast1 She loves it when She gets to go to Breakfast with Daddy and I do too. After that, it's bed time till 1400 and then it's Yoga X before work(and no I didn't get to finish up the last session either, sorry!)Well I'm 3 days into week 2 and Iam starting to see some results in my performance just since last week, that's a good thing right? OK, back to work now, Post ya later!

Work stuff...

Few people understand the psychology of dealing with a highway traffic cop. A normal speeder will panic and immediately pull over to the side. This is wrong... It arouses contempt in the cop heart. Make the bastard chase you. He will follow... But he won't know what to make of your blinker signal that says you are about to turn right. This is to let him know you're pulling off for a proper place to talk. I started late. This time it was because I had to go and Vote for a new District 2 VA Congressman, Go Scott Taylor. A former US Navy SEAL, an old friend and a supporter of REAL change and less wasteful spending in DC! Also I have a beautiful little 5yr old girl that for the most part is a good girl, but today turned into demon spawn! So I got a postponed start to my workout due to discipline issue with her... enough said.

As far as the workout went it was pretty fun and believe it or not very easy for me! For the most part we do this stuff twice a year here at work, so it was old hat to me. Tony and the crew started out with the normal stretching routine and warm up. We then moved into some balance stretching and for some reason this is where I have been having issues. My Balance is not the best, I assume this is due to weak leg muscle and new routines. Also I have noticed on occasions that if I'm just walking around I might have a slight swagger to the side. This might be a side affect of my ear piece I wear on the job so the bad guys can't hear my coms while I'm coming up on them. I believe it is messing with my equilibrium and balance, so I'm going to limit its use for a while to see if it helps.

The session continued with a barrage of punches, strikes blocks and kicks. It then moved into combo moves and more kicks. Due to being behind in my desired workout schedule, I FFWD through most of the breaks, again this is stuff I'm use to and it helped me gain some time back. I don't like doing that because I could really feel the fatigue towards the end, I did get a second wind and finished super strong in the last 10 minutes. For what it's worth I had a great time and was surprised at how well I did. Yesterday, I was getting all myself syked up about this evolution for nothing. This is by far one of my more favorite workouts so far. Tomorrow is a "Rest day", But don't forget, I still need to finish 1 whole hour of Yoga X that I bailed on Sunday night. Well 6 days down...84 days left to go! KEEP PUSHING PLAY!

P90X: Day 5 Legs and Back

After my tumble off the wagon yesterday, I jumped back on in glorious style! Today, I again started just a bit too late to get in my Ab RipperX, But I did get in the last one I missed so I'll just hit it in the AM when I get off work. This workout was a beast as are all the rest, but the fact that my quads are still burning(and I still have trouble bending down to sit) made this a real test of mental fortitude. But I did it. I did mod some of the routine to adjust for the fiery discomfort in my lower thighs and for obvious balance issues. I am starting to enjoy my workout time, I just keep thinking about my outcome in the end!

Also, I know I shouldn't be doing it, But I have a back habit of using the scale... I feel good and have been following my nutrition plan with no cheating, But I've gained 4lbs. Now I know that muscle weighs more than fat, but it's way to soon(4 days) to see that big of a change in my BMI. I am putting the scale up tomorrow and won't get it back out until day 30, that way I don't get discouraged. The only thing I can associate the gain with is either water weight or the combo of my Protein shake w/ L-Glut. tablets. Again, I'll just do what I need to do and stay the course. Tomorrow is Kempo X... wish me luck! Thanks for reading. 5 days done, 85 to go!( I'm not going to keep the day timer going for much longer, I'm just having fun!)

P90X: Day 4 Yoga X

WTF! I'm a pretty flexible guy even if I do weigh a metric ton(joke), but I was STRUGGLING to finish this workout. It has to be a combination of just being all in all sore from the level of workouts in the last few days and that I have never done yoga before. Getting the movements and proper form down was a jerky learning curve at best! Alas I have to admit defeat in my quest to concore the battle of the day... I stopped with a little less that an hour to go. Sad face here...

BUT! "A man can be defeated but not destroyed" as my good man E. Hemingway had said. Feeling a little sore and worn from the 1st day for some reason now. Mostly in my right tricep and forearm. Hopefully it will go away some. All in all I'm happy with the way things are going.

In this workout Tony(Horton) puts us through the ringer with 12 arm and shoulder routines...twice! This man is an animal!!! Well day 2 is in the bag and I didn't do that bad at all. The workout was just shy of 1 hour, but I'll admit it was a LONG hour. Plyo was difficult but fun, I definitely "brought it" and did about 90% without any mods. Also I didn't pause it until 29:14... and with that I only gave myself a 1min break. I'm so stoked and ready to keep going!

They say that this is the hardest workout of the series and I believe it too. During the session I did have a recovery drink as well as my water handy and can I say that I can def tell an improvement in my overall recovery speed with this drink. After I was done I cleaned up and took a cold bath(for the legs) and it was nice! I am working part time tonight and get off at 4am, at that point I will pick up my lost Ab ripperX that I missed yesterday. Well, If you care to leave any questions, comments or words of encouragements please feel free. More to come tomorrow Day 3: Shoulders and arms! 2 down 88 to go, keep pushing play!

P90X: Day 1 Chest and Back

OK, So today I started my journey down the P90X road. I've had this program just laying around the house for about a year now, I started it last June('09) and gave up after day2... well not this time! I'm in it to win it!!! Not only am I tired of being FAT and single(who wants a fat guy?), I find myself looking at my daughter Kennedy and can't stand the fact that she has me as a dad that is too out of shape to even take her to the park to play!

Change is GOOD:<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_5776_UeFpjA/TAldAAbBtkI/AAAAAAAAAEc/QGAVxskPPmc/s320/Day+1+front+flex.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479012676367660610" />
In the last few months, I've been ramping up my nutrition and diet plan and I feel now that I know what I need to do. If not I can tweak it as needed. I have my supplements, have my food, have my gear, now all I have to do is BRING IT! I also tested myself a month or so ago, to see just where I'm at physically by running a 5K race. Not bad if I do say so at 36 mins in 40deg windy weather! I'm not a runner in case you didn't know.

Day 1: Chest and Back...
I got a late start to my workout today due to being a good dad for my little girl. Saying that the Ab ripperX had to be skipped until tomorrow morning, so that I could make it to work on time is a no-brainier. I have done this workout a few time before, so I knew exactly what to expect. Although I was ready for it, it was still a hard workout! What made it worst was the fact that I kept watching the clock so not to be late in getting ready for work. Kennedy kept coming in the room also making it difficult to concentrate on the DVD. She finally settled down and started to do modified push ups from her knees...So cute!

All in all I made it though the workout with no real problems. I did my cool down while making my recovery drink and getting the shower warmed up. Oh, I did have some muscle soreness when I was trying to wash my hair.LOL! That didn't last longer than a hour or two. I give credit to my recovery drink.

Tomorrow I need to get some protein bars from BJ's and hit up my GNC for a new can of protein shake mix(it's gold card week!). I also need to get some more fruit like Bananas, berry's and peaches, along with some salmon and tuna. Tomorrow is also the dreaded "day 2" which is plyometrics day... done this one too...not my favorite, but I'll just have to suck it up and drive on! The only easy day was yesterday. I know nobody reads my blog, but in the hope that someday someone does, I hope it inspires them to keep pushing play...

Michael Savage - As you could probably tell I ran in my first 5k today. It was not a qualifier for the "Worlds" or even my best time clocked, but it was my first 5k and I have to start somewhere. It was also one of my goals for this year that I can check off the list too. One foot in front of the other...<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_5776_UeFpjA/S67J4z9vvMI/AAAAAAAAAEE/qAFDBB7Q-yg/s320/100_0659.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5453518176651295938" />
Due to a laps of intelligent thought on my part, I scheduled myself to work part-time the night/morning going into the run. My day started at 1pm on Friday when I woke up. The rest of the day was my typical running around finishing up errands, spending time with Kennedy and all in all wasting time. that night I prepped my gear for the next day and headed into work for my 7hr shift from 11pm to 6am. Once I got off I changed out of my uniform and secured my weapon in the glove box of my vehicle(not at all worried about some bum taking my piece)... At around 7:30ish I moseyed down to registration and picked up my "chip" for timing purposes and waited in the lobby of the Hilton for the rest of my group to show up.
The weather was close to 40, but it felt colder than that due to the wind chill being around 30-33, but at least the rain had stopped around 2 that morning and it was now sunny. Sunny=warmth right? ...Wrong. It didn't warm up until about 1k into the run. The bad part was I had over layered and started to get over heated to fast, This is one of those learning curve moments in sport that you never repeat

Cold!

Ran this morning after work. 39degs!!! type='text'>Valintines Day

My little Kennedy, is my world! Every moment I have her brings a smile to my face, and heart! If you have children then you know what I mean...if not, you will someday. I was thinking about how this Valintines Day will be a wash, when I then thought of her, and the years to come... I can't wait! The two of us will always have each other to love on the day that I used to hate. I may be lonely in life, but not alone with the love of my "Little Boo"...

Goals 2010...

Let me start by saying I HAVE THE WORST HEADACHE EVER! The command staff won't let me off either, Suck! But I know we are short staffed so I can take one for the team. On to business...

Lets see, I have a 250 mile charity ride for the National Law Enforcement Memorial, from Chesapeake Va. to DC coming up in May...

Goal 1: From the first of the year to May 12th I'd like to log 1000 miles. But that's only 200 miles a month you say, But let us not forget I work a rotating 12hr shift on perm nights. And I have my Daughter 1/2 the time too. So. I'm setting goals that are reachable (at first).

Goal 2: Drop the Lbs! I'm at a whooping 222lbs as of today, even with my primal(ish) eating plan. I need to get back to the gym/core/running/cycling side of life. I'm setting My goal to be 185lbs by July. I used to look like Walsh when I was racing, so if I can get down to 185 I know I'll be fast again. It's been burning in the back of my mind for the past 6-7yrs now(don't ever date or marry someone who doesn't believe you or your sport!), I miss my old life and I need to be that guy again. Plus I loved the people that I was around and that side of life/sport/racing! Beautiful, laid back people... I miss a lot of my old friends too.

Goal 3: Start and finish in 2 TRI's and 3 Mtn. Bike races. I have the knowledge and race experience to do this, I just need to meet goal #1 & 2 to meet this one. Oh and If I can swing it, a CX race would be a fitting end to a comeback season too!

Goal 4: I know I already do enough volunteering to choke a goat at these 26.2/13.1's in the area but I would also like to do my first 5/8 or 10k race. I mean damn I live at the beach, I should be able to find one or two of these things to run in this year! I don't even care what time I get, I just want to get out and do it!

So, how do I plan on doing all of this you might ask? By getting up off my fat ass and just getting outside more to start with(it's also helping that I'm canceling my cable in Dec too!) and by finding more support to motivate me here. By reconnecting with old teammates, shop mates and friend, and hopefully making new ones in the process! I need more people to challenge me by reading my blog and cheering me on! I've lost that get up and go over the last few years and I WANT IT BACK! So if you are reading this, join me on this journey and follow my blog(tell your friends to follow me too). Give me words of motivation, tell me to get up and go running on rainy days, call me and ask me to go for a ride and I guarantee you I won't let you down! And let me finish by saying, My headache is gone and I feel great! thanks for reading.

Yawn... Yesterday was a rest day. But Monday I rode pretty hard. Monday started off with me again getting off work @ 6am(after working 12hrs), and heading out for the group ride out of Fat Frogs Bikes.

They have a few rides that jump off a couple minutes apart... Class "A", then "B"... "C" and so on. Well I was felling great from the ride the day before, and was eating better too, so I jumped on the "B" pace(cat 3) group... hmmm. After getting spit of the back and dropped like a bad habbit I waited for the "C" group(cat 3-4) to catch me. I jump on their wheels and sat in for a few miles and was felling the pace... then we started rolling it up. Oh did I mention that the group was all ladies :) and one was the '08 Va. State road Champion(get her name next time)?! I just got my bike and still don't have a CPU(I'm looking at a garmin 205/305), so I don't know how fast I'm going. We continued to paceline for about 18 miles until I just didn't have it in me anymore. But we were only about 2 mile from the end and didn't mind "limpping" back to the shop.

I got back and started chattin with the "girls" and found out we were pulling it in at around 23-25 for most of the ride! WTF! Not bad huh? I mean not bad at all for a guy who has only riden maybe 6 times ing the last 8yrs! I felt good afterwords but tired. I think I'll try to tone it back just a little for the next few rides until I get a better base on where I'm at. Right now I have to remember it's all about the miiles and not the speed. again I work tonight, so I'm off to bed. It was really nice out, and I was feeling great even though I just work 12hs on the night shift. There were a few people already there when I showed up, so I started getting ready so not to hold anyone up. Albeit we didn't role out for another 20 minutes. My legs began to get cold(grab my arm warmer instead of legwarmers) and if forced me to warm up a little earlier than I'd like.

Finally we rolled out and started to get some blood pumping, that with the sun coming over the tree line my legs started feeling slightly better. Oh and I also fix my bar tape and tuned the front derailleur since the last ride and the new whip feels great now! Some (8)miles into the ride I noticed my left calf give me that "hey you!' cramp twitch... but I just rode it out. Did a couple sprints out of the saddle, and bridged a few gaps when the calf totally locked up. Pulling over was a bitch, then as I was getting off to massage it out the right one lock up too! After walking them out for 5mins I was able to jump back in the the group and finish out the rest of the ride working some intervals and pace lines. All in all I felt good and strong which was a nice surprise at the end of the day!

Sitting at work...

Here we go again, another 3 day weekend of working nights. At least I have a computer that I can use to surf the web! I'm looking up info on the new "Trader Joe's" said to be coming to Va Beach, but can't get the opening date anywhere. I'm stoked about it though! Thing is if I can get my meats and Veg from there and save some coin to boot I'm all about it! Plus, they have all the other ingredients I need for my "Primal Diet" also... and cheap wine.

Yesterday my Dad came over to see the new pad and instead of dropping a tom of money on going out to eat I suggested we just grill out(...Primal style). I've gotten a little older, as well as my little girl Kennedy who is now 4 years old. In December I bought a house, it's not hard to say that it has been a strugle in adjusting to the new bills! And I also got a new road bike too(pictures coming soon). With all of that I feel very liberated with my options in life. I am writing this from work and will make it short today, But with all that is new and good life can only get better. I'm looking forward to getting back into competitive/race shape this year for cycling and Tri's. Also going to be seriously revamping my diet too, using the "Primal" diet and James's Vo2Max page to help me out. Well back to work.

Day Three...

Back still hurts. The word was that a group of people from my department were going for a training ride. Nothing to long 35k or so at about a 15-18 pace. Again I was in a rush. And in turn forgot my water bottle, and sunglasses. Damn! Oh well, no worries, I was well hydrated from the prior night so I was good and I could just deal with the sun in the eyes.

Rolling up to the parking lot I noticed I was the first one there, it's 0640...hmmm. The others showed up a few minutes later, it's all good. Just thought they weren't coming at first. The group turned out to be four of us total, and the route we're riding is bad for a morning head wind. This could be bad for me due to just working 12 hours(at night). But I've been in worst spots before! The riders: Ret. Chief Mustin, Ret. Sgt. J. Mapes, his wife Sgt. K. Mapes from our I.A. dept.(yikes!), and yours truly.

So the four of us set out @ 0700, as planed, feeling good I might add. The weather was a nice morning 76 F with about 80% humidity, not bad for VB in July. I quickly noticed that I had put on some lbs sense my last ride, again I've been in worst spots, but that plus being tired wasn't going to help. And the Bike I had just got(less the 75 miles ago) was feeling loose, and just a bit small. It didn't feel "right" getting out of the saddle for the sprints, like it wasn't safe. All-in all I was going to give it my all, and hard charge what ever came my way!

The first leg was fairly uneventful aside from the normal jitters, and stretching that come from riding cold like i was. I took off on a couple of sprints to determine my top speed...uggg...25.3 but I had to keep telling myself that was into a head wind too! Average pace about 13-15 for the first few miles until we got warm. then we started rolling it up to about 16-19, now we're talking. I was starting to feel the fatigue in my legs. It had been Oct. '07 sense I rode last, and I was feeling it. The lactic acid was building up in my forearms too which is a new one for me. Pushing through it. I wasn't going to let that get to me, I used to experience this all the time racing in the past. With that out of the way I started to pull for a little, oh man did it feel great to be out in front at my own pace. Hitting 20-21 in the drops, it was like I was flying! The others jumped on after about 150 meters, guess I didn't hit'em that hard(next time).

At the half way point we hit some unpaved road repairs, it had been freshly graded. The others started complaining about the bumps, and gravel. Not me, I took the Raine's like it was Paris-Roubeax, and took off. Coming from a Mtn. bike back ground this was nothing new to me. Just a loose grip on the hoods and hammer! FUN! I waited for my comrades for about 30 seconds at the end(it was only a mile of pave). That's when the pain started...

After the pave the "Chief" started to roll it up to about 28-30. All I had to answer was to hold on and see where it took me. Well it didn't take me long... I started to bonk. Maybe it was the lack of sleep or my current diet, or just the fact that I'm a fat ass right now. But I couldn't hang. I fell back about 100m and got my 2nd wind. I bridged the gap back up and stayed in tight for about 2 miles. I was proud of myself. I still had it, even after all these yrs of not riding as I should have been. I still have it! I did think about the feel of my bike, the size and again how loose it felt under me. I've been riding for years and have rode many-a-many of bikes. I felt unsafe getting out of the seat and putting it down. I'll have to address this tomorrow! Can you say fit test!

The sprint took more out of me than I thought. The rest of the ride I was second from the back. Playing if off like I was helping Sgt. catch up to the front, the whole time struggling myself too. That went on for the last 7-8k. The ride ended at point "a" with all coming home safely. I learned where I'm at in my training, and nutrition. I did it though, I rode my bike for the first time sense my ex left me(I rode the same ride that morning too!) back in October! This was one step closer to getting my life back on my hands and not letting the past keep me down!!!

Upon leaving I changed and, started putting my ride on the racks. I was closing the fork in the drop out, when it slipped, and had to catch it from falling over... and must have pulled something in my back. Yup. Didn't know it until I got up for work @ 1545. Pain in the upper medial vertebra( my T6 or T7) haven't been to the doc yet. but I had to call out "broke" to work. Shit sux! I have to wait till the morning to see my Dr. otherwise I have to pay $200 to go to a doc-in-a-box, or pay $10 to see him. I can wait! sounds like icyhot tonight, and hot tub tomorrow! :) I guess I'll take tomorrow to start revamping my diet, and food intake. I'm tired so I'm out for now.

Starting weight: 225.6
Ending weight: 225.3

Day one...

This is the first of many blog entries, that I will be making to track my life from this point on. I'm not going to claim to be an English major, or to be able to wow the world with these words. What I'm looking to do is chart the ups and downs, and progress of my life, since the divorce and journey back from a short and very disruptive bout with alcoholism. Hopefully this is something I can keep up on, and give me purpose to do and try new things everyday to keep life fresh! Wish me luck, and if anyone has positive words of encouragement please post a comment!
